2 Physics 1C First Midterm 2/3/09 Name______________________________ Problem 1: Given the following circuit: a) (10 points) Suppose that the EMF is a battery turned on at t=0. What is the current that must be delivered by the battery just after turn on and a very long time after turn on? Draw equivalent circuits for each. Solution: Just after the switch is closed the inductor will prevent any current in the end leg and the capacitor will act as a short circuit. In this case the equivalent circuit is a battery in series with R 1 and i ( t = 0) = ! R 1 A long time after the switch is closed the capacitor is charged and no current will flow through it. The inductor will act like a short circuit and again all the current will flow through R 1 and i ( t = ! ) = " R 1
