Continuing the talk about the woman with balls They said that in order for the tissues to have developed, it would have taken a particular knowledge on the part of a very young girl to know to take any substances to make them develop, so they disregarded that option - Functioning as a female, but 5 years later came back for another examination - She admitted she had been using female hormones since she was very young - admitted that she lied before - She fooled them into thinking she was completely woman Gender is also a bodily axis of direction, you have some choice - not given in a dualistic way The fact that she fooled them means that it may have been dualistic She had to learn how to be female - we all learn how to be male or female right from birth The choice is open to you, in some respects In this case, the choice was open due to technology - could remold male genitals into female genitals Turns out that the line between sex and gender is not absolute - the line is blurred between male and female Females have XX on 23rd chromosome, Males have XY Out of 46 chromosomes, that one chromosome has a huge effect on sex The Y chromosome can be "screwed up", mutated, in between - makes the distinction difficult Bryan Sullivan --> Bonnie Sullivan Born with ambiguous genitals, in between a man and a woman Removed male aspect of genitals, made him a complete girl She was bothered that the doctors had decided what to remove, and what to make her as In actual fact, this indicated "betweenness" just as the sharing of the chromosomes show "betweenness" True of every human being, but it just varies in degree Axis of direction - culturally, we learn how we are supposed to behave, biologically the same thing is
