Ch1 Book Notes for Class Wilhelm Wundt - known as the father of Psychology - Psychology's date of birth = 1879 Psychology became the scientific study of conscious experience First 2 schools of psychology: Structuralism and Functionalism Structuralism Based on the notion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements and investigate how these elements are related (Edward Titchener) Functionalism Psychology should investigate the function or purpose of consciousness, rather than its structure (William James) William James' book, Principles of Psychology, perhaps most influential text in history of psychology - based on darwin's natural selection: some inherited characteristics that provide survival advantage are passed on, thus making human consciousness an important characteristic of our species - psychology should investigate functions rather than structure -consciousness consists of continuous flow of thoughts, and structuralists were looking at static points rather than the flow
