Team 30 MEMORANDUM DATE: January 00, 2010 TO: Mr. Orendorff FROM: Team 30 SUBJECT: Analysis of Chapter 15 Objectives Chapter 15 is a walk-through of the process of applying and interviewing for employment. It offers tips to make your application more attractive to a potential employer and gives advice for interviews. Chapter 15 lists the steps for finding employment from start to finish and what employers are looking for during the interviews. This chapter also offers information regarding what to expect after the interview and how to follow-up with the potential employer. APPLICATION LETTERS accompany résumés and explain the attached documents, the reason for sending the documents and the possible benefits for the reader if they read the material. Effective application letters can be written using the following tips: Be specific. Avoid general objectives and be as clear as possible about the kind of opportunity and employer being sought after. Demonstrate an understanding of the company by echoing messages from the job ad, company brochure or other source. Never volunteer salary information unless asked for it. Even if asked, do not use specific numbers. Keep it short—and keep email application letters even shorter! Letters should be able to convey someone’s strengths and character and how they will help with the job. Show some personality! Letters should reveal style unlike the standard résumé format, but still appear professional. Aim for high quality. Proofreading is a must because the letter is the first impression! Outstanding résumés could be overlooked due to unprofessional and sloppy application letters. Job interviews follow a typical sequence of three distinct steps including:
