MEMORANDUM DATE: January 00, 2010 TO: Mr. Orendorff FROM: Team 30 SUBJECT: Analysis of Chapter 1 Objectives Chapter 1 discusses how to be successful by effective communication in business. It outlines why effective communication is important, explains necessary skills to communicate effectively, and gives characteristics of effective communication and those characteristics that make business communication unique. Chapter 1 also offers strategies on how to communicate in the workplace and with new technology effectively. Finally, this chapter discusses the importance of ethics in business communication and differentiates between ethical lapses and dilemmas. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR SUCCESS IN TODAY’S BUSINESS FOR SEVERAL REASONS: Helps manage workflow. Stronger decision making. Improves business relationships. Increased productivity. Enhances professional image. Clearer promotional materials. Quicker problem solving. Improved stakeholder response. COMMUNICATION SKILLS SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYERS EXPECT: 1. Organize ideas and information logically and completely. 2. Express and present ideas and information coherently and persuasively. 3. Listen to others effectively. 4. Communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. 5. Use communication technologies effectively and efficiently. 6. Follow standards of grammar, spelling and other aspects of high quality writing and speaking. 7. Communicate in a civilized manner that reflects today’s standards of business etiquette.
