See also Part A of this experiment for details on the TLC analysis. Prelab The usual entries: Name, Title, Date, Purpose, and Procedure. Find the structure and physical data (e.g., melting point) for fluorene and 9-fluorenone, plus any of the solvents (e.g. boiling point) that you will be using for the chromatography and put this information in a table in your notebook.

Unformatted text preview: Procedure Follow the procedure for Experiment 4, Part D in Pavia. Omit the step regarding scoring and breaking the tip of the Pasteur pipet. Perform the TLC analysis on the fractions from your chromatography and compare to the mixture that you separated using methylene chloride (CH 2 Cl 2 ) in the TLC chamber (as described in Part A). To Complete the Experiment Determine the melting point of the fluorene and 9-fluorenone obtained from the chromatography. From your TLC plate, compare the R f values for each material.
