ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LANEY COLLEGE CHEM 12A Version 2.0, 11/07/07 IR Spectroscopy. Analysis of Functional Groups Reading Technique 25 in Pavia; Wade, Section 12-1 to 12-12 Prelab Read through the sections on IR given above, especially the Pavia reading since it is very informative. Find characteristic peaks for each functional group found in the compounds below. Procedure You will be instructed on how to run the instrument during laboratory. You will obtain four IR specrtra. One each for methyl salicylate, 2-butanol, bromobenzene, and benzophenone. Use NaCl plates to form a thin film

Unformatted text preview: for the first three samples and either a Nujol (mineral oil) mull or KBr pellet for the benzophenone. To Complete the Experiment Analyze each IR spectrum by finding the characteristic absorptions in the each spectrum for the type of functional groups that each sample contains. For each compound create a table in your notebook to list all of the major identified peaks observed in the spectrum. Compare your spectrum to the one shown in the Aldrich Library of Infrared Spectra, 2nd Edition found in the laboratory....
