June 4, 2008 First and Last Name Readings: Section 6 Introduction, Chapters 60 – 63 Subjective : When thinking of disabilities, I tend to think of my brother who has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. I find it really hard to think of people with learning or mental disabilities as having a disability sometimes when the disability is “high functioning,” as I am very cautious in labeling people in this particular arena. Coming into this particular class, I was expecting a discussion about people with physical handicaps, and so I was taken by surprise when the conversation tended to be broader. Objective : The class discussed disabilities. In particular, we talked about how difficult terminology is in this domain, as there is a clear difference between social and medical definitions. We also watched a video in which an individual explained to us her experiences and views on being labeled as “retarded.” Assessment : This was, of great surprise to me, a really difficult class to sit through.
