Reasina Suvaroporn MASC 110L – 1/27/09 Experiment 1: Determination of Avogadro’s Number by Electro-deposition of Copper Metal Objective: To determine and verify Avogadro’s number by experimenting the electrolysis process using two copper electrodes in a sulfate solution Theory: An electric current is passed between two copper electrodes for lengths of time. Knowing the amperage passed, and for how long, and from all these, calculating the number of coulombs, electrons, copper ions, and moles of copper atoms passed, the Avogadro’s number can then be estimated.
