Why Torture? Torture is a popular concept used throughout the world today. The act of torture destroys societies and leaves people with thoughts of violence on their minds. Torturers set bad examples for others. They rarely are punished for their actions. Although the government does not support torture, it still uses it. They use torture techniques to install fear among people, to get people to confess important information, and to punish bad people. Torture goes against our constitution. The eighth amendment states that no man should be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. With that said, torture is never right. An important purpose of torture, the infliction of severe mental abuse and physical pain, is to desecrate a person’s humanity. Child and animal abuse and dehumanizing people are wrong. Teachers are forbidden to hit a student in the name of discipline in many states. Disallowing these acts of violence teaches children that hitting is wrong. However, some parents believe that doing these things cause no harm. If all parents are allowed to hit their children in the name of discipline, some parents will go too far and will inflict severe emotional and physical damage on their children.
