Give a brief description for each mechanism. b) How do these mechanisms differ from those principally employed to toughen ductile materials? Problem 2 A compact tension C(T) test specimen is designed and tested according to the ASTM E399 standard procedure for measurement of the plane strain fracture toughness, K Ic . Accordingly, an applied load (P) versus clip-gauge displacement ( δ ) test record was obtained and a measure of the maximum load, P max and critical load measurement point P Q was determined. The test specimen dimensions were of width W = 100 mm, thickness B = 50 mm, and crack length a = 50 mm, and the measured load values were P Q = 100 kN and P max = 105 kN. a)
