The area of the parallelogram is || ~ PQ × ~ PR || = p 3 2 + ( - 1) 2 + 2 2 = 14 . (ii) The plane has equation 3( x - 2) - ( y - 1) + 2 z = 0 = 3 x - y + 2 z = 5 . ± 2. Find the second order Taylor polynomial near (1 , - 1) for the function f ( x,y ) = x 3 y. Answer: We compute f (1 , - 1) = - 1 , f x = 3 x 2 y = f x (1 , - 1) = - 3 f y = x 3 = f y (1 , - 1) = 1 , f xx = 6 xy = f xx (1 , - 1) = - 6 , f xy = 3 x 2 = f xy (1 , - 1) = 3 , f yy = 0 . The Taylor polynomial is P 2 = - 1 - 3( x - 1) + ( y + 1) - 3( x - 1) 2 + 3( x - 1)( y + 1) . ± 3.
