1. The 1970s was the time period where the landscape of rock music changed dramatically. There was a transformation from artists that wanted to share their music with the world to artists that were after more. There were many artists during this time period that were in search of fame and fortune. The 1970s saw a rapid increase in sales for the record industry. The industry hit the one billion mark for sales during 1967. It only took 6 more year to double in 1973 and it only took 4 years to double again, increasing up to four billion dollars in sales in 1978 (Friedlander 229). Along with increased sales, the rock music industry began to go further into corporate America with smaller companies being bought up by larger corporations (Friedlander 229). The 1970s also saw a change in the social structure of America. Great divisions began to arise in gender, race, social status, economic status and many other area of society. These niches began to be filled with certain musical groups that would fit to the different social groups (Friedlander 229). Rock music also began to broaden its fan base with older people continuing to enjoy it with the younger generation just beginning to enjoy it. 2. The 1970s gave birth to two new genres of rock music. The first being punk rock which traces its roots back to the mid-1970s in places such as the United States and the United Kingdom. The other of the two was glam or glitter rock. Glam rock can trace it roots back to the early 1970s in the United Kingdom. Punk rock was born out of shared frustration for the troubles of the British society in the 1970s. Britain’s economy was down and unemployment rates were rapidly rising (Friedlander 244). New young garage bands began to get together with complete disregard for the current norms of rock music. The band that pioneered the movement was the Sex Pistols. They dressed in grungy clothes and were not like anything people had seen before. The sand about the problems that they were
