1 Chapter 14 Solutions 14.1 Solubility 14.2- 14.5 What does dissolve mean? A solid dissolves in a liquid when it mixes completely with the liquid. The solid has broken down into pieces so small that its particles spread all through the new mixture. The solid and liquid will stay mixed without shaking. The original solid breaks apart into pieces not much bigger than a few atoms or ions .

2 Solution - a homogeneous mixture that contains particles the size of a typical ion or small molecule. Composed of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent. • Clear and transparent • Colored or colorless • Coke? • Water? • Milk? Solution -a homogeneous mixture that contains particles the size of a typical ion or small molecule. Composed of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent. Homogeneous mixture -a uniform mixture that has the same composition throughout. Colloid -a homogeneous mixture that contains particles in the range of 2-500 nm. Heterogeneous mixture -a NON - uniform mixture that has a different composition throughout.

3 The goal of making a solution is to make sure that all things are soluble. Like dissolves like! Summary 1. the mixture of two or more components (solute and solvent) is homogeneous and has a variable composition (ratio of solute to solvent can be varied). 2. the dissolved solute is molecular or ionic in size
