1 Chapter 8 How to Balance a Chemical Equation 1. Count the number of atoms of each element on both the product and reactant sides. 2. Determine which atoms are not balanced. 3. Balance one element at a time using coefficients. 4. After you believe that you have successfully balanced the equation, check to be certain that mass conservation has been achieved. 5. Check to make sure that the coefficients are the lowest whole number possible.
