CLASSICS 126 SUDY GUIDE (“MIDTERM”) The following terms and names should be useful to know for the midterm. You may not ask the instructor or teaching assistant for the meaning or significance of these terms. You are encouraged to form study groups. The midterm may also have material upon it that is not directly related to the following list. Therefore, students should also review their class notes. The majority of the test will be directly related to this list. Exogamic suitor/bride – (Looking for food/progeny), Usually accompanied by reciprocity (gains/losses) I.E. Ability to see the future but blind. Monster-killer – Role of the hero, the hero/individual has (a threatened birth, significant birth, long travels, acquisition of gear/weapons, defeats monsters [often serpentine], gains honors, source of etiology. Autochthony - Nativeness by status or originating I.E. Creation of humans from rocks (birth from the earth). Aetiology (general) – To give an account for nature, religion, social traditions. Aetiology (Homeric Hymns) – Arrival of a God, [The role of the Curetes in Crete (Made noise to “hide away” the birth of Zeus)]. Demodocus – Singer amongst the Phaiakians; plays lyre. Blind poet sings songs of gods (Ares ad Aphrodite) and men (Trojan War). [Representation of Homer]. Oral poet, follows the aspect of “higher poetry” dactylic hexameter. Circe – Dread goddess “Who talks w/ mortals,” turns men into pigs (food), Hermes appears w/ a moly plant explains to Odysseus what has happened. Tiresias – Thebean seer (Prophet), gives information, explains to Odysseus to enact the “Sailor and the Oar,” tells him to walk bearing an oar to a pagan land to bring glory and worship to Poseidon [Create a cult of worship]. Antikleia – Odysseus’s mother, explains to him the events within Ithaca (Telemachos
