The system was used because it was viewed as being the best system when electing the president. Thefounding fathers wanted to ensure that the presidential election was voted on by the people and that the people were fairly represented in their states. The Electoral College does this by fairly balancing the vote between the states, that way the smaller states do have a say versus the larger ones. The Electoral College also helps shield uneducated voters from throwing an election one way or another. The Founding Fathers established the Electoral College into the Constitution when it was ratified in 1787 (What is the Electoral College, 2019). “The Founding Fathers established it in the Constitution, in part, as a compromise between the election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens” (What is the Electoral College, 2019). The Electoral College works as a middle ground when it comes to electing the president and vice president because it neither relies on Congress’s vote or the popular vote solely.
