Terms You Should Know
•
Individuals
are objects described by a

things)
•
Variable
is a characteristic of an
individual and it can take on different
values for different individuals
•
Sample
is what we actually measure

Terms You Should Know
•
Categorical variable
places an
individual into one of several groups,
has a finite value
•
Quantitative variable
takes numerical
values and are usually recoded in a
unit of measure

Classes of Quantitative
Variables
•
Interval
variables have a numeric
scale (but zero point is arbitrary and
negative numbers are allowable)
•
Ratio
variables have a true zero (zero
is the absence of whatever of
whatever is being measured) and
negative numbers are not allowed

Classes of Quantitative
Variables
•
Continuous
variables have no
smallest unit of measurement and
partial values are possible
•
Discrete
variables do not allow partial
variables

Distribution
of a variable tells us what
values it takes and how often it takes
these values
