Not until 1803 was there enough scientific evidence to show that matter is composed of indivisible particles. In 1803, John Dalton proposed the Atomic Theory. Dalton’s Atomic Theory 1 Matter is composed of indivisible particles called atoms. 2 Atoms of the same element are identical and have the same properties. 1803 Atomic Theory 3 Compounds are composed of atoms of different elements combined in simple, whole number ratios. 4 During chemical reactions, atoms rearrange into different combinations (mass is conserved).
