of HIV encephalitis has begun The researchers in the Neurovirology laboratory at Medial School of Temple University have constructed and characterized the riboprobes encoding an M-CSF gene from macaque monkeys. Approximately 40 million people worldwide are infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), which invades the central nervous system and leads initially to cognitive dysfunction and eventually to dementia, a clinical syndrome known as HIV-1-associated dementia (HIV-D). Clinical- pathological investigation of HIV shows that early in the course of HIV-1 infection, the virus penetrates the CNS via the transmission of virus-infected macrophages that in turn trigger a series of neuroinflammatory responses and lead to a complex set of neuropathological alterations, including HIV encephalitis (HIVE).
