Plan time before class to get the reading done. 9 Have a pencil or pen in hand. (NO highlighters! They = re passive .) 9 Be curious about the reading. ..take an active stance. SET? 9 Make sure your environment is conducive to reading and that you = re really concentrating on the task. o Is this a productive time of the day for you? o Is this a quiet location with few distractions?? Your dorm room may not be best. Check out the library (some wonderful study nooks away from the crowd), the RITreat in the Student Union, or a quiet dorm lounge. 9 Take a few minutes to check out the entire text the first time you sit down with it. Look at the organization and the user-friendly features it uses. o How current is it? o How is the table of contents organized? (This can be useful for review.) o What has been included at the back of the book? o Is there a glossary of useful words? o Is there an appendix section? (Useful background or supplemental information.) 9 For each reading assignment, do a quick preview . o
