History 240 Professor Hastings Fall 2009 STUDY GUIDE ON ANALECTS The sayings of Confucius constituted one of the “Four Books” that educated men in China, Japan, and Korea memorized as part of their basic education well into the twentieth century. By reading this work with understanding, you will gain insight into both the age in which Confucius lived and the Confucian philosophy that has been so influential in East Asia. On September 10 , there will be a quiz on Books I-IX of the Analects . To prepare for this quiz, you should: 1. Use the study questions below. The multiple choice questions for the quiz will be drawn from the material to which the study questions direct your attention. 2. Plan to attend a discussion group on September 8 . There will be three discussion sections during the regular class time. Those with last names beginning from A-H should meet as usual in LILY G126. Those with last names beginning with letters from I to R should go to UNIV 217. Those with last names beginning with letters from S to Z should go to UNIV 219. 3. Come to the discussion section prepared either to attack or to defend Confucius from one of two points of view. If your first name begins with A-L, attack Confucius (or defend him from attack) from the point of view of Daoism. If your first name begins with M-Z, attack Confucius (or defend him from attack) from the point of view of Legalism. 4. PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITY: At the end of the discussion section, hand in a one-page summary of your attack or defense. ADVICE: 1. Note that the link in the syllabus provides you with the entire Analects . When you print out, be sure to print only the pages for Books I-IX. 2. The Analects is an old text, and there are some lines no one understands. You should not worry about names beyond the ancient sages (Yao, Shun, Yu), the dynasties (Xia, Shang (Yin), and Zhou, and the major states (Zhou, Chu, Qi, Qin). The Chinese words you should remember are junzi, dao, Tian, li, and ren. 3. There are notes accompanying the text. Enjoy them, but the information in the notes will not be included in the quiz. STUDY QUESTIONS Book I 1. What activity does the master consider a pleasure? To study and practice what you studied. 2. What event does the Master consider an occasion for joy?
