What is language? a. System of symbols b. Arbitrary, changes culture to culture c. Express oneself through meaningless sounds, letters, to create complex  language(s) d. Speech is what delivers a language (not the only way) II. Characteristics of Language** a. Discreteness i. Use discrete units of sound which are combined to make rules and  sounds shared by a single language community b. Symbolic (Arbitrary) i. Uses a system of symbols ii. Symbols have no inherent meaning, only an understood meaning
