3. (a) For female, the mean is 2.43kg, variance is 0.06kg
2
and standard deviation is
0.24kg. Obviously this is a sample.
(b) For male, the mean is 2.64kg, variance is 0.04 kg
2
and standard deviation is 0.2kg
(c) Female birds have less weight than male ones. The spread of weights is very
similar for both male and female birds.
5. (a) Discrete. Because # of ant lion pits is isolated number, coming from counting.
(b) Mean is 3 and variance is about 2.94
(c) Median is 3 and range is 8
(d) Calculations in (b) are more informative because mean and variance deal with real
value of the data, however median utilizes only the ranks and not the actual values
of each recording. Also range uses only two of the data points and is somewhat
dependent on sample size.
17.
