Roth October 9, 2009 Suggestions for the Second Paper on Urban Places According to the syllabus, this assignment asks you to “describe and assess the significance of a particular urban place or neighborhood based on what has been written about it in readily available published sources.” Here are some questions to ask in framing your topic, organizing your data, and presenting your descriptions and assessments. The first set of questions (place as physical element) will apply to virtually any topic you choose. Other than that, these questions will not apply uniformly to every topic. You will have to adjust how much emphasis you place on each set of questions, and you may choose to omit some entirely depending on the type of place you choose and the type of data available in your sources. These are some suggestions and guidelines, not a checklist. Describe the place as a physical element in the landscape : For a neighborhood, public space, or landscape :
