6 Valence bond (VB) theory Valence bond (VB) theory is a theory of covalent bonding. VB theory is based on the interaction of atomic orbitals to form bonds. Some principles of the theory: 1) Opposite spins of electrons in the bonding pair (as in an atomic orbital) 2) Maximum overlap of the atomic orbitals that form the bond 3) Formation of hybrids of the atomic orbitals in many cases
