4 Electronegativity Electronegativity ( χ or EN ) (Linus Pauling): A measure of the ability of an atom in a molecule to attract electrons to itself. [Don't confuse electronegativity with electron affinity .] Influence on bond strength (energy): In a molecule with unevenly shared electrons, bond strength (energy) is higher than expected (from averaging energies of covalent bonds among different molecules) because of an electrostatic component to the bond energy in a molecule with unevenly shared electrons.
