PHI 100 – Critical Thinking Wilmington University Analyzing Ads Chapter 10 suggests several questions to ask regarding the persuasion techniques of ads. Using the four ads provided for you, complete the analysis chart for each of the different ads. Comment on the presence of a MINIMUM of five different categories on each ad chart. If the item does not appear in the ad, then comment on an item that does. Note: these boxes all ask you to discuss what you see in the ad; you are not to simply say whether the tactic appears in the ad. You must discuss how it appears, its effect, its use, etc. This chart is modeled after the one in your text reading, so review that material to help you understand the categories. Don’t miss the large top box which is also to be filled out with a summary of the ad itself. Please note: This document is multiple pages long. There is one chart on each of the next five pages.

PHI 100 – Critical Thinking Wilmington University Description of Ad #1 . In your own words, describe what you see in the ad visually and also what feelings or ideas you think the ad is trying to evoke. The first ad is about verbal abuse and it has a man yelling at a girl with a fist coming out of his mouth punching the girl. It’s a weird way to show it but it’s letting you know that words can hurt just as bad as physical violence. The ad is trying to help any female or male out there that is in a verbally abusive relationship find help. Explanation/Comments/Observations 1. Discuss any ways that this ad includes scare tactics. It’s a slightly violent ad so that could cause a person living through abuse to feel a certain way seeing this ad. 2. Discuss the evidence provided. Is it valid? Is it statistical? Experiential? Something else? They don’t provide any evidence to support the claims. I believe it’s still a valid claim because verbal abuse is a real thing that people suffer through daily. 3. Discuss the use of group pressure as found in the ad. It uses group pressure in a good way. It lets the person suffering from the abuse know they aren’t alone and a bunch of people have their back. 4. Discuss any informal fallacies that we have studied that appear in the ad. Its using the fallacies of appealing to emotion 5. Discuss any use of emotive language, images, or euphemisms.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
