1 LAB #10 (Week #10): Direct Measurement of Maximum Oxygen Uptake Using a Bicycle Ergometer PROCEDURES: 1) Using one subject only, follow the procedures described in Unit 19 in the Kinesiology 142 Laboratory Manual. 2) Ensure that the subject completes the informed consent form before beginning the exercise test. 3) The exercise protocol will be as follows: Time Power Output (Males) Power Output (Females) 0 - 2 min. 100 watts 70 watts 3 - 4 min. 130 watts 95 watts 5 - 6 min. 160 watts 120 watts 7 - 8 min. 190 watts 145 watts 9 - 10 min. 220 watts 170 watts 11 - 12 min. 250 watts 195 watts 13 - 14 min. 280 watts 220 watts 15 - 16 min. 310 watts 245 watts The pedaling frequency should be 80 rpm or higher. 3) Collect expired gas in meteorological balloons every second minute until the subject gets close to exhaustion and then collect gas every minute. Don’t forget the nose clip! 4) Monitor heart rate using a heart rate monitor. 5) Allow the subject an adequate amount of time to cool down at the end of the exercise
