Trophic Ecology and Food Chains Trophic ecology represents the field which investigates the flow of energy through different organisms. Food chains are representative of the organisms that pass energy from the sun. Generally, less than 10% of the energy at one level is passed on to the next level. They do not represent the real world which is much more complex.
