Unformatted text preview: History of the South American Revolution ended in the south Articles of Confederation created government that was more of a friendship type government replaced by constitution In 1790s differences begin to develop First political party born in the south federalists didnt consider themselves a political party and Washington thought that political parties was a curse South states created federal government and in the end had the right to judge if the federal government was doing their job Hamiltons economic program turn U.S. into a manufacturing giant not in the interests of the south didnt want to encourage industry, wanted to encourage agriculture First political party = Jeffersons party party of states rights and limited government support for Bill of Rights Democratic Republican party became democratic party Believer in progressive nationalists First sectional national party the Republican party born in the 1850s party against slavery In the 1820s slavery defines north and south Hartford Convention first secession talks go to Connecticut to talk about making separate treaty with Britain in the War of 1812 Alien and Sedation laws prevent dissent during the time we almost went to war with France France and Britain seizing American ships Virginia and Kentucky resolutions try to nullify the Alien and Sedation law States = final arbitrator in what Congress passes as law Got in the way of shipping in the South pissed off southerners and the wanted to get rid of this law and also wanted to get in a war with Britain because of how it was messing up their shipping Calhoun not a secessionists wanted something that looked like the UN for the north and south where they each got a veto Crisis over admitting Missouri Dealing with slavery Ohio River = boundary of slavery Missouri = west of Mississippi How would it be counted? Maine admitted as free state so Missouri = slave state First time sectional division over slavery Included boundary line that was further south than Ohio River 36-30 line about slavery Extends to Texas when admitted into Union never extends further west Nullification Crisis Jackson National government has authority but the size should be limited Whigs people who couldnt stand Jackson John C. Calhoun couldnt stand Jackson but not a Whig Jacksons unwillingness to re-charter the National Bank Tariff of Abominations high tariffs on imported manufactured items Prejudicial towards the south relied heavily on imported goods Tariff making imported goods more and more expensive South Carolina calls special session and decides to nullify this tariff use the Virginia Kentucky resolutions Jackson says he will hang all the traitors Both sides back down the tariff was adjusted...
