Lecture 9/22 Talks about chapter 3 and 4 in black book Civil rights period Montgomery bus boycott takes the movement out of the courts and into the streets Mansfield Gave southern policy makers the wrong idea – that they didn’t have to comply with federal orders because Shivers got away Southern moderates drowned out Climate – compromise solution – charged with being disloyal to the southern way of life Social and political revolution Little Rock – 1957 Less than 10 black children to central HS – mobs came out – governor brings out national guard – try to do a replay of what governor Shivers did in Texas – do whatever you can to keep the peace – means no black children enrolled in school Eisenhower pissed about this so he federalizes the national guard Replay of reconstruction – send in troops to make sure they get what is supposed to be done accomplished 1957 – first year that civil rights bill had been passed since reconstruction Written by liberal republican Had be watered down – responsibility on the person who was trying to vote When finalized in 1965 federal registrar in south to register voters themselves LBJ helps get it passed in senate – lots didn’t agree with it so had to do a
