Lower graph – party identification – Stays pretty low for Republicans until 1984, gets above the 40% mark in 1984. a. Great accomplishment for with party id above 40% mark b. But needs to be at or above 60% mark due to low #’s of black vote for Repubs. c. Not about Republican dominance, but Republican progress ii. 2. Graph pg. 223 – 60% or greater of white conservatives identifying themselves as Republicans in 1988. a. In 2000 almost tie between those identifying as Dems as Repubs. b. Respectable by 1980’s to call selves Republicans B. Chapter 8 – Breaks up southern white voters into 4 groups – graph pg. 245 a. Seeing growth of Republican (57%) and independents b. Core Democrats, either liberal or moderate democrats c. Conservative Democrats as dying breed. d. Swing voters important to Republicans – reason why not to go too far right. e.
