Individual Motivations I. The Study of Individual Motivations A. The first generation of scholars in the field focused on the socio-demographic characteristics and the personality traits of the suicide bombers. i. Most of these studies came to the conclusion that suicide bombers exhibit no distinct features. ii. Not different then their peers – basically normal. B. The second generation of studies emphasized the roles of social networks and the surrounding community in motivating individuals to perpetrate such attacks. i. Way you do something is dependent on the way you were raised and in what environment. ii. Think about drinking and smoking – we know it is bad for us but we do it – we have to get used to the taste, don’t like it right away a. You start in a group setting – never start alone – want to fit in b. Then you get used to the taste and addicted to it then start to influence others into doing it iii. In suicide bombing there is at least a way out – suicide bombers are being convinced that they are doing something good for their community and will go to heaven a. There is no heaven because you smoke – you aren’t doing anything good for the population when you smoke in fact you hurt your community from secondhand smoke II.
