GOV 365N – Suicide Terrorism October 8, 2009 Reading Question #2 Hafez and others have emphasized the “culture of martyrdom” Palestine yet; in the past several years, Palestinians have turned away from suicide attacks and have begun using rockets. A shift from martyrs to rockets can be explained by Pape’s strategic logic approach. Pape specifies three properties that are inherent of suicide attacks, “timing – nearly all suicide attacks occur in organized coherent campaigns, not as isolated or randomly timed incidents, nationalist goals – suicide terrorist campaigns are directed at gaining control of what the terrorist see as their national homeland territory, specifically at ejecting foreign forces from that territory, and target selection – all suicide terrorist campaigns in the last two decades have been aimed at democracies, which make more suitable targets from the terrorists’ point of view.” In the case of the Palestinians, their
