1. How does he depict Austin character and motives? SFA’s character was similar to that of the other ambitious Americans at his time and much like his mentor and father, Moses Austin. He was principled in his behavior towards others, and sensitive to their status. Austin believed in both merit and nobleness, which was a common outlook shared by most great statesmen of his time – like Houston , Jefferson, and the Founding Fathers. Men with character like this brought forth a new nation from the wilderness of a new continent. According to Cantrell on page 115, his “nonsectarian upbringing and his liberal education” brought him at odds with Mexico and Catholicism. This was typical character of the better men of his day. SFA’s motives for his actions as a leader were familial , national , and personal. He was the inheritor of his father’s plan for expansion and settlement in Texas. His father tutored him in politics , high society, and most other masculine disciplines. The national aspect of SFA’s motives was the
