UTL 202 – Lopez November 17, 2009 Sheri Hanslik 7 th Grade Texas History Lesson Plan #6 Reflection For my sixth and final lesson I did a “life as an explorer” activity. This involved putting the students into a “boat” (circle of desks) while I played the part of Christopher Columbus. Throughout the voyage, there were ocean sounds playing, I sprayed water on them, and yelled out instructions to row. If a student did not row, they were taken off the ship and given a “storm” card, symbolizing that they had died from the storm. The students needed to keep a wedge of lime in their mouths throughout the voyage to prevent the onset of scurvy. If a student took the lime out, then they were taken off the ship and given a “scurvy” card, symbolizing that they died of scurvy. Finally, I handed out small pieces of biscuits to the remainder of students on the ship. However, just like the explorers, there was not enough for everyone and a few students were handed a “starvation” card, symbolizing that they had died of starvation. At the end of the
