Summary: The author discusses how the role of having a different first language other than English can play into difficulties with literacy. The author uses the case of Miguel, an English Language Learner (ELL) in the 8 th grade, to show how students who are categorized as ELL are not taken into count when discussing reading difficulties even though they should be. The author also states that literacy in the first language plays a large impact on difficulties with literacy the student will have in the second language.
