December 2004/January 2005 | Volume 8 | Number 4 Closing Achievement Gaps Joseph and the Achievement Gap by Peggy Groover Joseph struggled in my 7th grade literature class. He didn't like to read and was reluctant to write. He was not alone. Like many of the African American boys in my literature classes, Joseph had low or failing grades. Assessing the situation, I found that 50 percent of the African American boys in my classes scored below the basic level in language arts on our state's standardized test, while only four percent of all other ethnic groups scored below the basic level. Schoolwide, 71 percent of African American boys in the 7th grade scored below the basic level in language arts, and the percentage increased to 75 percent for 8th graders. There was clear evidence of an achievement gap between these boys and the other students in my school, and I wanted to do something about it. Does the Research Ring True? As I gathered some background on factors that contribute to gaps in achievement, I was particularly interested in a 1996 study by Anne Simpson, which noted that class reading selections frequently do not reflect African American preferences, nor do they feature characters
