ARS300 | Intro to Art and Popular Culture Unit 1 : What is Art? Purposes & Principles of Art & Design III. Principles of Design Lecture If the visual elements of art comprise the vocabulary of the language of art, the principles of design can be seen as the grammar of art. Principles of design or composition guide the ways in which the visual elements are combined in a work of art to achieve a certain effect. Your reading for this topic discusses the design principles of unity and variety, balance, emphasis and focal point, rhythm, scale, and proportion. Artists use—or intentionally violate—these principles of design in order to meet their particular goals. As you read, notice how artists use the same principles to create works of art with very different effects.
