09.17.09  Notes HMST  Socratic form of justice involves a eugenics program  Chapter 6  o Analogy between the individual and the city  o They found everything they need to determine what justice is  o City has wisdom courage, self discipline, and morality or justice  City  1. Wisdom  2. Courage  3. Self Discipline  4. Morality (Justice is the same)  o If we can determine what the first three are then we should be able to determine  what the fourth one is  o Wisdom  o Courage  o Self discipline  o  Justice  Makes justice very uninteresting, tries to prove what justice is by claiming what it is not  Soc: you can say what justice is  o Take one thing into account: not that city is “just” because these three things are  in it, any city will exhibit the characteristics that he lays out

o Each one of these things within the city and within the soul is performing a  certain function  o The accounts of wisdom, courage, self-discipline are sufficient conditions for  justice o Just because W,C,S are true does not garuntee the truth of J  o The principle of specialization; enables us to determine each of these things  correctly  o Guardians  :  Wise  o Auxiliaries :  Courageous  o Masses:  Disciplined  o *says these things occur naturally  Wisdom : Guardians are the source of wisdom  o The guardians are the rulers of the city (428E)  o He is indicated that the wisdom he is interested in is not that it is exhibited in any  activity, not just wisdom in general he is talking about, it is a specific type of  wisdom that makes them a ruler  o Wisdom: the ability to plan and organize the city  o Wisdom  of the guardians  is a specific type of wisdom,  the wisdom  involved   in planning, organizing, and ruling a city  o Type of knowledge they possess allows him to claim wisdom has been  discovered  o Everything these people are being educated for good character  o The guardians  are always being educated  to maintain good character

o Socrates: has introduced a form of knowledge that has nothing to do with the  type of education Socrates has laid out so far  o Pro blem: this education  for good character has not been supported  by his  education  theory  o
