Management--- Chapter 2: Ethics and Civic Social Responsibility 1/19/10 Ethics o Code of moral principles o Set standards of “good” or “bad” or “right” or “wrong” in one’s conduct Ethical Behavior o What is accepted as good and right n the context of the governing moral code o Different cultures can see plagiarism as collaboration All depends on perspective Laws, values, and ethical behavior: o legal behavior is not necessarily ethical behavior going through a red light at 2AM o Personal values help determine individual ethical behavior. Terminal values: happiness, justice for all Instrumental values: help you achieve terminal values, happiness, etc., compassion, Transformational leadership: won’t do something unethical no matter what Transactional Leadership: more political, whatever to save their ass Utilitarian view of ethics —greatest good to the greatest number of people Individualism view of ethics —primary commitment is to one’s long-term self-interests
