Oxidant - A compound that oxidizes other compounds and is therefore reduced Reductant - A compound that reduces other compounds and is therefore oxidized Oxidation - When a compound loses an electron Reduction - When a compound gains an electron Note: in class Dr. Parson mentioned that an excited molecule can be a stronger oxidant or a stronger reductant. But, practically speaking, it becomes a stronger reductant. 3) List some structural similarities and difference between hemes and chlorophylls Similarity - Utilize a conjugated porphyrin ring, absorbs light Differences - Heme utilizes Fe, Chlorophyll utilizes Mg. The pi-system is elongated in the chlorophyll porphyrin (compared to the heme system). Heme absorbs blue light, chlorophyll absorbs blue and red light. 4) How does the extension of the pi-system affect the absorption spectrum?
