Thomas Quinn January 7, 2010 BIOC 441: AA, AE Lecture 1 Questions: 1. Draw palmitic acid and stearic acid. How is the synthesis of stearic acid different from the synthesis of palmitic acid? 2. What are the four main categories of fatty acids and what are their functions? (HINT: One of them is described in lecture 2) 3. What is the VERY first step of fatty acid synthesis? Write the reaction with reactants, products and the enzyme identified. If a prosthetic group is utilized, name it and its function as well. 4. Acetyl-CoA is generated in the mitochondria, detail the pathway that enables the transport of Acetyl-CoA to the cytosol where it can be used in the above reaction. (Be sure to note the energy cost).
