The speech, which was given onthe evening of January 28th, 1986, was supposed to be the President’s State of the Union address, but there was a tragic space shuttle explosion that morning. The Challenger Shuttle was set to take off on that morning, televised for everyone to watch. The shuttle exploded midair after the takeoff, and it was seen by people across the country who had been tuned into the broadcast. Although the country had just watched the explosion and death of the 7 who were on the spacecraft, “much more was lost than seven individuals and a spacecraft” (Mister, 1986). The picture of the space program and the space shuttle together had become a symbol of the American Dream and was heavily used in Reagan’s campaigning (Mister, 1986) When it went down, it almost was a symbol of the fall of America’s greatness and a failure of its space program.
