Lecture 11 10/08/09 Odysseus uses his masks ; he does not use the straightforward warrior code all the time. Non-coincidence is a common theme with Odysseus; he often has different parts of his personality which can not be explained individually (such as seeing him entirely as a warrior or entirely as a sneaky, plotting individual). Land of the Dead (book 11) : Encounter with Tiresias: entering into the underworld ( loss of memory ). Topos/Topoi: setting and image components of a story, topoi is the plural, many settings (the Odyssey). Odysseus goes there to ask for advice on how to appease Poseidon and to find the way home. A ceremony has to take place. p. 155Tiresias prophecy and suggestion “But even so and still you might come back, after much suffering, if you can contain your own desire and contain your companions” epithet: “ Glorious Odysseus”. p. 156 Odyssey’s fate : “Then, if you keep your mind on homecoming, and leave these unharmed, you might all make you way to Ithaka, after much suffering.”
