2/10/08 NATS 101: The World We Create Homework Assignment #4 1a) Radioisotope C 14 Carbon 12 – 6 protons, 6 neutrons Carbon 14 – 6 protons, 8 neutrons Carbon 14 as a radioisotope C 14 Half-life – 5,730 years 1b) Estimation 10,000 radioactive C 14 (normal) / 2,500 radioactive C 14 (remaining) = 2 Half-lives 2 Half-lives * C 14 Half-life (5,730 years) = 11,460 years old The homicide took place about 11,460 years ago, NOT 10 years ago 1c) Justification To solve the proposed problem, the following steps were taken: 1) Estimate the number of half-lives of C 14 decayed a. Achieved by comparing the normal amount of C 14 within the human body to the amount of C 14 remaining within the body and clothing 2) Find the half-life of C 14 a. Achieved by an on-line source [http://education.jlab.org/itselemental/ele006.html] 3) Estimate how many years ago the murder took place a. Achieved by multiplying the number of half-live of C 14 decayed by the number of years within one half-life of C 14 4) Compare the age of the body to the last recorded glacial retreat (ice age) a. Comparing the age of the body to the last recorded glacial retreat; both events occurred within the same time frame. This proved to be highly supporting information concerning the approximate age of the body, as 10,000 years ago (last glacial retreat), 11,460 years ago (homicide).
