Sherrington argued that vertebrate locomotion was accomplished by ‘chaining’ together a series of reflexes. This would require sensory stimuli. In 1911, Thomas Graham Brown discovered that rhythmic walking persists in animals without dorsal roots, i.e. in the absence of sensory information.
