1 NERVOUS SYSTEM 5 Dr. Phelps Lecture 6 I. Organization of the autonomic nervous system: sympathetic and parasympathetic II. Motor innervation of the sympathetic nervous system. III. Motor innervation of the parasympathetic nervous system. IV. Introduction to the cranial nerves V. Cranial nerves containing principally somatic motor fibers: CN III, IV, VI, XI, XII A. Comparison of somatic and visceral sensory afferent components: Fig. 15.1 1. Somatic sensory monitors cutaneous and proprioceptors in skin and muscle 2. Visceral sensory monitors sensory activities of visceral organs B. Overview of somatic and visceral motor efferent components, their functions and the neurotransmitters they use Motor Efferents Somatic Nervous system Autonomic Nervous system Skeletal muscle sympathetic parasympathetic Smooth muscle cardiac tissue exocrine glands The peripheral efferent system is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The effector cells innervated by the somatic nervous system are skeletal muscle cells. The autonomic nervous system innervates 3 different types of effector cells: 1) smooth muscle, 2) cardiac muscle, and 3) exocrine glands.

2 1. Somatic nervous system In spinal cord Ach skeletal muscle (ventral horn) In the somatic nervous system, one neuron will innervate a single skeletal muscle fiber. The neurotransmitter released is Acetylcholine (Ach). Ach will bind to receptors on the skeletal muscle causing muscle contraction. 2. Parasympathetic nervous system = resting and digesting
