FDSC Lecture 1 Students who complete this course will possess the knowledge and understanding needed to make healthy and safe food choices Nutrition: the food that you eat affects your o Quality of life, longevity, immunity, susceptibility to diseases o How well the body works and how long it lasts depend on many factors Health and fitness depend on genetic traits, the quality of your diet, and other lifestyle factors Lifetsyles influence health and longevity Bad eating habits, smoking illicit drug use, drinking, level of physical activity, psychological stress and amount of sleep determine promotion of health or disease Obesity o Over 2/3 of US adults overweight or obese o Major risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and certain cancers o Estimated 300,000 obesity related deaths/year o Prevalence in the US In 1990 10 states had a prevalence of obesity less than 10% and no states had prevalence equal to or greater than 15%
